Cardioversion is electric shock given to correct an irregular heart rhythm. Using paddles directly applied to the chest, this procedure can be scheduled or an emergency solution to restore normal heart beat. Non-emergency cardioversion can be used to treat atrial fibrillation (afib). In afib, rapid, irregular electrical impulses cause the heart to beat inefficiently, increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke. This short procedure offers minimal recovery and emergent life-saving treatment for many patients. If you know you have an irregular heart rhythm, your Heart Team can help determine the best treatment for you.

How it works:

  1. You will receive short-acting sedation.
  2. Your doctor will deliver an electric charge through electrode paddles into the heart.
  3. Your heart's natural pacemaker will resume normal function.
  4. Your doctor will closely monitor your heart rhythm.
